power conditioning - sm t 10 HMC1060LP3E v 0 0.1211 quad low noise high psrr linear voltage regulator theory of operation hmc1060lp3 e is a four output ultra low noise regulator. t he four outputs can be confgured to supply anywhere from 1.8 v to 5.2 v. t hree outputs (v r 1, v r 2, and v r 3) are confgured to supply 3.3 v by default, and have a different maximum current rating. v r 1 is rated at 100 ma maximum, and v r 2 and v r 3 are rated at a maximum of 50 ma each. t he fourth output, v r 4, is confgured to supply 5 v by default, and is rated at 300 ma maximum current. d etails specifying various confguration options are available in o utput voltage confguration section. d efault confguration is shown in application schematic section. t he hmc1060lp3 e includes a number of features including: ? t hermal protection feature that disables the outputs of the hmc1060lp3 e when the device temperature reaches a critical temperature. more details are available t hermal protection section. ? p t a t (proportional t o absolute t emperature) feature that can be enabled or disabled via an external p t a t b pin of the hmc1060lp3 e . p t a t feature, when enabled, scales the output voltage with device temperature in order to supply optimal supply voltage and current at each temperature in order to maximize the performance of devices supplied by the hmc1060lp3 e . more information about p t a t feature is available in p t a t feature and benefts of p ta t sections. thermal protection t he thermal protection circuitry of the hmc1060lp3 e disables the outputs when junction temperature rises to approximately +150c. t he outputs are kept disabled until the junction temperature cools down by approximately 15c. t he outputs are then re-enabled. i n cases where ambient temperature and/or power dissipation are sufficiently high to re-heat the hmc1060lp3 e repeatedly to +150c, the thermal protection feature of the hmc1060lp3 e will repeat. as a result the thermal protection feature will cycle the outputs o n and o ff, protecting the hmc1060lp3 e and the components it supplies from damage. after the overloads, or other fault conditions are removed/changed, the hmc1060lp3 e output will return to normal operation. i f a momentary short-circuit occurs at the output, the associated increase in temperature may activate the thermal protection circuitry, protecting the hmc1060lp3 e and the components it supplies. t he device is not protected from short circuit events lasting longer than 10 seconds. o peration at absolute maximum r atings levels may damage the hmc1060lp3 e immediately. r eliable, long term operation requires adherence to e lectrical specifcations . stability considerations a regulator is a feedback system. a large capacitor with low e s r ( e quivalent series r esistance) may affect the feedback dynamics and can result in unstable operation or noise peaking. t wo approaches are recommended to ensure regulator stability: 1. i f only one decoupling capacitor is used at the output, the chosen capacitor must have an e s r as defned in the stability r equirements table below. t his guarantees stability over all loading conditions with the chosen decoupling capacitor. 2. i n the case where several capacitors are connected at the output (which is often the case with noise and spurious emission sensitive circuits), the recommended approach is to insert a small resistor in series with the load after the 100 nf feedback capacitor (0.1 resistances shown in the application schematic ). r ecommended e s r values are shown in the stability r equirements table below. stability requirements t otal capacitance at v r x r ecommended e quivalent series r esistance 0.1 f to 1 f 200 m > 1 f 100 m for price, delivery and to place orders: hittite microwave corporation, 2 elizabeth drive, chelmsford, ma 01824 phone: 978-250-3343 fax: 978-250-3373 order on-line at www.hittite.com application support: phone: 978-250-3343 or apps@hittite.com
power conditioning - sm t 11 HMC1060LP3E v 0 0.1211 quad low noise high psrr linear voltage regulator HMC1060LP3Es ptat (proportional to absolute temperature) feature t he performance of most electronic circuits varies with temperature. t he effect on performance is usually most prevalent at high temperatures, where the electronic circuits slow down due to changes in transistor characteristics. t he hmc1060lp3 e p t a t mode is designed to counterbalance the effect of temperature changes on devices supplied by the hmc1060lp3 e . w hen p t a t mode is enabled, the hmc1060lp3 e scales output voltage proportionally with temperature, resulting in higher supply voltage at high temperatures and lower supply voltage at lower temperatures, as shown in figure 6 and figure 8 . higher supply voltage has the opposite effect as that of temperature increase. i t increases supply current and speeds up electronic circuits, thereby improving performance and offsetting the negative effect of high temperature on device performance. hmc1060lp3 e p t a t mode is enabled by grounding hmc1060lp3 e s p t a t b pin. i t is disabled by leaving the p t a t b pin of the hmc1060lp3 e foating. t he rate at which hmc1060lp3 e s p t a t mode scales supply voltage with temperature is optimized to work with hittites w ideband plls with i ntegrated vc o s, such as the hmc830lp6 ge . however, this feature is also benefcial for other products as well. most electronic circuits slow down at higher temperatures. higher supply voltage at higher temperatures has the opposite effect of speeding up the circuitry by providing more current and thereby improving performance. output voltage confguration all of the outputs of the hmc1060lp3 e can be confgured to supply anywhere from 1.8 v to 5.2 v. t he output voltage is confgured using external resistors. p t a t mode can be enabled/disabled for all output options. default confguration t hree outputs (v r 1, v r 2, and v r 3) supply 3.3 v by default, and one output (v r 4) defaults to 5 v. t he d efault confguration of the hmc1060lp3 e is shown in the application schematic section of this document. supply voltage less than default confguration t he outputs of the hmc1060lp3 e are confgured to supply voltages less than the default values, down to 1.8 v minimum, by connecting a resistance ( r y in figure 13 ) between pins v r x and rd x (where x = 1,2,3,4). figure 13 shows an example of confguring v r 1 output. o ther outputs are confgured in exactly the same way (ie. r y is added between v r 2 & rd 2, v r 3 & rd 3 and between v r 4 & rd 4). 1 2 3 4 5 6 10 4 10 5 10 6 10 7 ptat disabled ptat enabled output voltage (v) ry resistance value (ohms) outputs vr1, vr2, & vr3 output vr4 figure 13. recommended HMC1060LP3E confguration for supplying output voltage values less than default. [3] o ther output voltages values that are greater than the default value are achieved by using and external resistor r x as shown in figure 16 . o utput confguration in figure 16 supports both p t a t mode enabled and disabled.
